The other evening, I went out for a walk with my beagle in Riga — just a casual stroll to enjoy the last sunlight of the day. We wandered into a new trail I hadn’t noticed before, right near Ābeļu dambis along the Daugava river. To my surprise, it turned out to be a quiet, peaceful stretch with small fishing spots tucked between trees and reeds. It’s funny how you can live your whole life in a city and still discover something new just by taking a different turn.
With dusk about two hours away and the river gently flowing, I decided to film a little fishing session using my Fish8r travel kit. I quickly assembled the rod from the compact set (still can’t believe it fits in my hand luggage!), found a spot, and tried my luck.
First, I experimented with white and black bread — but the fish weren’t in the mood for wheat. Then I remembered an old trick: look under stones or planks near the water’s edge. Sure enough, I found a few earthworms hiding in the damp soil. Hooked one up — and within two minutes, a small perch struck. A quick catch-and-release, but still a satisfying moment.
Moral of the story? If you’ve got half an hour, a nice quiet spot, and a compact fishing kit in your bag — you might just end your day with a peaceful, unexpected adventure.
